Washington, DC – December 16, 2025 – Susie Wiles, President Donald Trump’s White House Chief of Staff and the first woman to hold the position, has sparked widespread controversy with candid remarks in a Vanity Fair interview, where she described Trump as having “an alcoholic’s personality” despite his well-known teetotalism.

Who Is Susie Wiles?
Susie Wiles, often credited as the architect of Trump’s 2024 comeback victory, is a seasoned Florida-based political operative. She co-chaired Trump’s successful Florida campaign in 2016, managed Ron DeSantis’s 2018 gubernatorial win, and later returned to lead Trump’s 2024 national campaign.
Appointed White House Chief of Staff immediately after the 2024 election, Wiles has been praised for bringing discipline to Trump’s second term. Known for her low-profile, no-nonsense style—earning her nicknames like the “Ice Maiden”—she draws from decades of experience, including roles in Ronald Reagan’s administration and various Republican campaigns.

The “Alcoholic’s Personality” Comment and Vanity Fair Revelations
In a series of over 10 interviews with Vanity Fair’s Chris Whipple, Wiles offered unusually frank insights, linking Trump’s boundless confidence to her personal experiences.
“Some clinical psychologist that knows one million times more than I do will dispute what I’m going to say,” Wiles said. “But high-functioning alcoholics or alcoholics in general, their personalities are exaggerated when they drink… Trump has an alcoholic’s personality. He operates [with] a view that there’s nothing he can’t do. Nothing, zero, nothing.”
Wiles connected this to her father, legendary broadcaster Pat Summerall, whose alcoholism shaped her ability to handle “big personalities.” Other notable quotes include calling Vice President JD Vance a “conspiracy theorist for a decade”. Elon Musk an “odd duck,” and criticizing Attorney General Pam Bondi’s handling of Epstein files.

Backlash and Response
Wiles quickly denounced the Vanity Fair article as a “disingenuously framed hit piece,” claiming significant context was omitted. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended her, stating Trump has “no greater or more loyal advisor than Susie.”
The interview has fueled discussions about internal dynamics in Trump’s administration, with coverage from major outlets.
